Chapter 35

Right after Vanessa hung up; Kenny took her cell phone and turned it off.

“I’m sorry,” Kenny mumbled and stepped on the gas.

Everything became a blur. Kenny turned the streets of Dayton into his own personal Autobahn and Vanessa tried to look directly into Kenny’s eyes, trying to figure out if this was some sort of sick joke. But some reason, her vision became blurred. Kenny looked out of focus and Vanessa couldn’t tell if the expression on his face was anger or relief.

Vanessa sat quietly, looking back and forth at Kenny’s gun and out the window. She looked at people going about their ordinary lives. She started wondering if any of them had ever experienced the ordeal she was going through right then.

As Kenny sped through the back streets of Dayton, Vanessa had rows of perspiration trickling down the nape of her neck into her hair and soaking through the top of her Christian Dior blouse. A long stream made its way down her spine. But Vanessa didn’t care. All she cared about was one thing: getting away from Kenny.

Yet there he was, sitting right next to her, more frightening, more horrid, and more dangerous than ever.

Is this one last hurrah? Or is it denial on his part? Or temporary insanity? she thought, hoping for the latter. She turned toward him. “Excuse me. W-What did you say?”

Kenny started droning on about something, but Vanessa couldn’t hear him over the roaring engine of the Cadillac and the even louder noise inside her head.

“I said, aren’t you happy that you joined me?”

“I don’t know yet!” she replied in a near holler. Hell no, I’m not happy to be with you! You just kidnapped me. I just want to get away from your crazy ass, she thought and then said, “You still haven’t mentioned where we’re going? I don’t like serious, Kenny.”

“Oh yeah.” He smirked. “You just don’t like it when you’re not in control and I love it.”

Before Vanessa could counter-speak, Kenny barreled into a sharp turn, his foot nowhere near the brake pedal.

“AAAAAAHHHHH! Stop this car! Kenny, stoooooop!” she shrieked along with screeching tires as the Cadillac lurched and seemed to have thoughts of flipping over.

Kenny tilted his head back and laughed maniacally into the translucent sunroof. “Stop for what? We’re just getting started!” He giggled, ignoring all of the pain, desperation, and fear that danced across Vanessa’s twisted face.
